2. Respondus LockDown Browser: How to Install

Respondus Lockdown Browser (Student Guide)

Your instructor might require the use of Respondus LockDown Browser for certain quizzes in your course. LockDown Browser is a locked browser used specifically for taking quizzes in Cougar Courses (Canvas). It prevents you from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications (like Word) during a quiz. If a quiz requires that LockDown Browser be used, you will not be able to take the quiz with a standard web browser. Your instructor may also have enabled Respondus Monitor, which uses your webcam to record you while you take the quiz.

Before Downloading

Downloading

You cannot download LockDown Browser from an external link, you must do so from the Cougar Courses quiz/exam that requires it. Unfortunately this is only possible once the quiz is available. This is why we recommend instructors create a practice quiz that is available the whole term so that you can download LockDown Browser ahead of time and ensure it is working correctly at any point. If you do not see a practice quiz that requires LockDown Browser in order to download/test ahead of time, please contact your instructor to request they create one.

  1. Open Chrome, Firefox (PC) or Safari (Mac).
  2. Login to Cougar Courses (cc.csusm.edu).
  3. Go into the course and go to the quiz that requires LockDown Browser. Click the "Take the Quiz" button.
  4. Click on "Download Respondus LockDown Browser."

Before Using

  • Be sure you are not using AVAST anti-virus program. The latest version of AVAST blocks the LockDown Browser and it will interfere with using Lockdown Browser until you remove it.
  • Close all other programs, including Skype/Zoom and other chat systems, which may be running in the background. You may need to disable third-party plug-ins or tools enabled in Firefox.
  • If Monitor is enabled, check your webcam setup to make sure your webcam and mic work.
  • Take a practice quiz, if your instructor has made one available, to ensure LockDown Browser is working correctly.

Launching LockDown Browser

  1. Close all open programs.
  2. Locate the “LockDown Browser” shortcut on the desktop and double-click it. For Mac users, launch “LockDown Browser” from the Applications folder.
  3. If prompted, either close a blocked program (e.g. screen capture, instant messaging) by choosing Yes. Or, close LockDown Browser and close the blocked program before restarting LockDown Browser.
  4. If prompted, choose "Canvas" from the dropdown menu.
  5. Log into Cougar Courses.
  6. Navigate to the quiz within the course and begin the quiz.

For more information about possible problems with Lockdown Browser, please visit this webpage: Lockdown Browser Help

3. Cougar Apps: How to Use Campus Software

Students can use Cougar Apps to access campus software without having to install it on their devices. Cougar Apps offers two options for accessing the software: via a web browser or through Citrix.

Instructions for web browser: CougarApps Online

Instructions for Citrix Workspace: CougarApps Application

4. Cougar Apps: How to Transfer Files to your Device

If you are using Cougar Apps to run programs, please note that any work you do on the platform will not be saved on your local computer. To save files from Cougar Apps to your computer, you will have to download Citrix Workspace and store the files on your local hard drive. A video tutorial demonstrating the steps to do so is available here.

Faculty & Staff

1. Global Protect: How to Install and Use

GlobalProtect is a Virtual Private Network (VPN) that enables network traffic to appear as if it is originating from the school network. This is crucial because certain resources may be inaccessible when you are not connected to the CSUSM network. Therefore, to access school resources while off-campus, you will have to install and set up GlobalProtect software on your device.

IITS has the ability to configure GlobalProtect on loaners and OTP units. Here are instructions on how to install GlobalProtect on your personal device.

2. Agent: How to Install and Use

Agent is a software application that enables internet-based calls to be made using a computer. Each Agent user has a unique username, password, and extension that is set up to function with a school number. It is important to note that if you are off-campus, you must first connect to GlobalProtect before accessing Agent.

IITS has the ability to configure Agent on loaners and OTP units. Here are instructions on how to install Agent on your device.
